Still Going

FInish Line

It has been a little over 3 months and I have lost 26 pounds. While the number on the scale is a little disappointing (more on that later) the weight loss community also speaks to Non-Scale Victories (NSV) and I have a lot of those. In addition to feeling stronger, healthier and just plain better overall some of my big NSVs are:

  • I have gone from a 2X-3X to XL in shirt sizes and I am down a pant size or two.
  • I can fit into all of my old work clothes that I was saving for “when I lost some weight”.
  • I am going to have to have my wedding ring re-sized very soon because it is about to fall off of my finger.
  • I can run longer before I run out of breath. Still not too far but further than before.

While I am eating WAYYY better than I was 3 months ago this is still the area that I need to make my focus in the coming weeks and months. This, in my opinion, is the reason why I have only lost 26 pounds and not 36 or 46 pounds. Yes, I said ONLY. I know, I know… don’t lecture me about my choice of the word only. I know it is better than nothing and is a great accomplishment. I am not discounting losing 26 pounds but I would be lying if I said that I was not disappointed by this number. Mostly because I feel like my effort and hard work in the gym should be reflected more in my weight loss.

My friend tagged my in an Instagram post the other day that said the following:

eating right

She tagged me in this post and I had not shared my struggles with her about my eating habits. I saw it as a sign, as well as, a good reminder of what I need to add to my priorities in order to maximize my success.

With that being said, I am still VERY motivated and much enjoy a good gym session and workouts with my trainers, Juan and Ashly. When I started my journey I told myself that I was not going to set a number of days that I had to go to the gym each week because I didn’t and don’t want it to feel like a chore. I want it to be something that I want to do. I really think this is working well for me because I find myself working out 5-6 days a week and it isn’t getting boring.

There are still some days that I don’t want to go and sometimes I don’t but most often, I find, those are the days I need it most so I push myself and make myself go and I never regret it! :)

Thank you to everyone who provides me the support, motivation and encouragement to push forward in my journey. I am off to a great start but still have a long way to go. Until next time!

Getting Caught Up

I have been a little lax on getting things posted. The weekend and beginning of this week was crazy. On Sunday, Ryan and I had dinner and bingo with Gina and Cody. Me and Gina won but it wasn’t a lot but still good to win nonetheless. It was such a great time but I was bad food wise. We ate at Johnny Carinos and it was definitely a cheat day for me. My first one since I started my new journey and I was really nervous about having a cheat day because there have been times when a cheat day turned into a cheat weekend that turned into a cheat week into a cheat month and before I know it I am cheating everyday.

I spent my birthday cleaning the house and preparing for my grandma to come visit from Washington. She got in around 7 pm we came home dropped off her things, changed and went to Jack Allens for a birthday dinner. I had a birthday salad (Twisted Cobb Salad-grilled achiote chicken, roasted corn, grape tomatoes, cotija cheese, pumpkin seeds ranch vinaigrette and homemade corn nuts). This is SUCH a big deal for me because I would have much rather had the chicken fried chicken and I was my birthday so I definitely had a “reason” to cheat and I didn’t!! So this was a huge non-scale victory for me and my mindset was that I was going to eat a salad so I could have many more happy, healthy birthdays.

Tuesday my grandma and I hung out running all day. We went to Macys and she got me some new shoes for working out, 2 new pairs of workout pants/capris, and a new sports bra. It was all much needed and the shoes are soooo much better than what I had before.  We went to Joann to get the supplies for our sewing marathon that we would have on Wednesday. We went to HEB to get some groceries for din din. By the time we got home it was time to make dinner. Ryan made the chicken (for me and grandma) and steak (for him) on the grill and grandma made this delicious cucumber salad. We ate and shortly after headed out to babysit for the evening.

Wednesday we got home pretty earlier and started our sewing marathon. We finally finished about 3:30 pm. My grandma took in 7 panels of curtains, made a new curtain for the back door, and assisted me in making a t-shirt blanket. The s-shirt blanket is a beast and is not quite yet finished. Afterwards I took her up to see where I work and meet my work family and then took her to her friends house for a sleepover. The only thing that I would have done differently over the last few days is take some time to get in a workout of some sort. I did not gain anything while on my little diversion which is good but I didn’t loose anything either. I am soo close to that first 10 lbs being gone so that is my immediate focus.

I went back to work on Thursday and started tracking calories again. After work had a training session with Tanner (my PT). It was really a great workout. We did circuit work with 5 different stations and before I know it I have busted my ass for 20+ minutes.

Yesterday, I made it to the gym for a nice cardio session (which I still need to do more of). Here are the results.

workout 4-17

Today, I am going to go to my cousins after I get off of work to spend time with family before they head back home. Nothing like some good family time just wish that Leah and Talaya would be there with us. Just patiently waiting until I get to see them again because I know I will be able to one day.

The Scale Says What??

prepare to die!

I stepped on the scale this morning and I was sooooo happy!! Down 3.4 lbs since Wednesday and 7.2 lbs down since the 31st. Next goal is out of the 40’s.

This is the last weekend I will spend being 30. I have so much to do. First thing in the morning, 10 am, I have a workout with my trainer. I need to get an oil change, do some touch up painting, going shopping and for pedis with Sherri and we will see what else is in store. I didn’t work out last night because I had a lot to do around the house but I was able to get some cardio in tonight. I did feel bad for not doing anything Thursday but sometimes rest is necessary. My workout results for tonight are …

workout 4-8

I am going to have to step up my cardio game. Me and the elliptical are going to be best friends!! Here is the beginning of our budding friendship….

workout 4-10

I had a yummy dinner and have decided that I will have to make it more often. Turkey (100 cal because I had 2 servings), cheese (35 cal) and spinach (20 cal) sandwich with Miracle Whip (50 cal) and Mustard (0 Cal) with chips (120 cal), egg (60 cal) and pickles (10 cal). Had a hard time meeting the water goal today but I am finishing that up right now.

dinner 4-10

Had a hard time meeting the water goal today but I am finishing that up right now. Some days are harder than others but time got away from me today.

Last night I made spaghetti squash with chicken, mushrooms, garlic and kale. It was not my favorite dish and in the future I will use spinach instead of kale because I didn’t like the texture. The mushrooms were so juicy and tasty. I took the leftovers to lunch today but didn’t totally finish it.

dinner 4-9 lunch 4-10

I did yard work on Wednesday which I counted as my workout. Here are the results from that workout…

Still motivated

I have been on the go since last Tuesday and it has never felt better to sit my butt on the couch and watch my piled up recorded TV. The only difference between sitting on the couch a few weeks ago and sitting on the couch tonight is that I don’t feel as guilty for doing it.

I hit and exceeded my water goal both yesterday and today so I am excited about that. I have found that I want to get the goal out of the way as soon as possible so that anything that I do after is just extra! It also keeps me full so I am not always hungry.

Yesterday I was up super early (I couldn’t sleep) so I actually cooked breakfast. 100 calorie english muffin, cheese, Canadian bacon, and a little bit of grape jelly. I also had coffee.

breakfast 4-6

I came home for lunch and made this yummy sandwich, pickles and tomato and cucumbers with balsamic. It was delicious! I love balsamic vinegar and today Tristy gave me a good idea to use it when cooking as “sauce”. I cannot wait to try it.

lunch 4-6

I had a snack a little after lunch cottage cheese and strawberries. I like the combo with peaches more. I also tried a different cottage cheese and I didn’t like it as much as the one I used previously. I will be changing back to the old one Breakstone or something like that.

snack 4-6

I had my first workout with my personal trainer yesterday. The workout is about 20-25 minutes and my results are ….

workout 4-6

My trainer said that sometimes the calories for circuit training are not correctly calculated so it was likely more that I burned but I will just use this number since it is something I can see. For dinner I had a smart one, carrots, kiwi and a almond snack bar.

Today when I weighed myself it showed I was down 1.8 lbs. Some progress is still progress and I am good with that. I am going to start taking pictures of my weigh-ins for even more motivation.

Linda and Tristy were over my way today so we went to lunch together. It was a little reunion. We went to Olive Garden and I must admit it wouldn’t normally be my first choice when I am trying to shake off the pounds but I was able to find some healthier choices that fit into my calories. I had the rosemary garlic chicken with garlic mashed potatoes (400 cal), minestrone soup (110 cal), and some salad (140 cal). I drank water and I didn’t eat not one bread stick!

lunch 4-7

I went to the Lunch Crunch PM tonight with Dulce. It was a good workout and gosh that trainer is crazy good. She makes everything look so easy. Here are my results.

workout 4-7

I had a nice protein packed salad with chicken, eggs, carrots, cucumbers, grape tomato and light balsamic vinaigrette.

The Weekend

This weekend including Friday was a tad crazy. I got to meet my dear friend Linda for lunch. She picked Lubys. Normally when I go to Lubys I order the chicken fried chicken, salad, corn, mashed potatoes, a roll and sweet tea. Not anymore.

This time I was planning on ordering the baked chicken but something else caught my eye, blackened tilapia. For those of you that know me, this is a big deal. I used to tell people that I didn’t eat anything that came out of water. I have been testing the waters (pun intended) and while I still very much prefer chicken, turkey, pork and beef this is another healthier option.

I skipped the roll, got balsamic instead of ranch, chose green beans and cabbage over corn and mashed potatoes and drank water instead of sweet tea.

On Friday evening I met Sheri, the bestest, most wonderful interior designer I know, for a little shopping in preparation for revamping the guest room… more to come about this venture.  I ate when I got home which was a little late and while better than stopping for fast food I could have made some better choices.  I did meet my water goal for the day!!

Saturday wasn’t a great day foodwise. I had a bowl of Frosted Mini Wheats with 2% Milk so that was terrible but I didn’t eat again until 5pm. After work we had a kickball tourney which was over for us at about 4:45. I was kid sitting (they aren’t babies) and they chose Sonic. I was really bad at Sonic. I had a Chicken Strip Dinner and Mozzarella Sticks ( I can eat). I did drink water but I did not reach my water goal on Saturday.

Kickball Workout…

I came home Sunday morning from kid sitting and stopped at Wal-Mart to get stuff to make Ryan and I breakfast. I had coffee, egg whites, canadian bacon, 100 calorie english muffin with jelly (low fat), and a slice of cheese. All in all it was about 400 calories.

smart choices

Ryan and I went to Home Depot and back to Wal-Mart to do a little grocery shopping. When we got home I started working on the guest bedroom and before I knew it, it was 6:30 pm. I had a Green Goddess smoothie for about 280 calories and that was all that I had all day. I know this is bad and believe me, will not be the norm. While painting the guest room I wore my heart rate monitor. After I started it something happened and my totals were lost so I started it again.

This is the result…

I have been up since 4 am and tossed and turned all night. I am sore and tired but have a great week ahead of me. I meet with a personal trainer tonight for my first session. Wish me luck…

April 2nd- Gosh am I sore

I first want to start off by saying thank you to everyone for the support and encouragement. I means a lot and it is very helpful in keeping me motivated.

This morning when I stepped on the scale it said I was down 1.8 lbs from Tuesday. Something is more than nothing so that was nice to see. I am so sore today from the Tuesday and Wednesday work outs but I must continue.

I worked out at home for a little bit. I danced watching Dance Fitness with Jessica on You Tube. She makes it look so easy but it is super hard. It goes by fast because I like to dance. Each song is about 4-5 minutes and I rest while I look for a new one. She has a lot. I didn’t burn a lot today but it is 258 more calories then I would have burned sitting on my couch so I will celebrate that.

Another celebration, I hit my water goal of 64 ounces today!!

I forgot to take a picture of my dinner but I had a salad with cucumbers, eggs, apples, croutons, chicken breast and some lite balsamic vinaigrette. My neighbor brought over some Filipino food and I did have a few bites of that. I didn’t have any of the homemade flour tortillas that she brought over later 😉

April 1st- Results and Dinner

Today I burned 522 calories during my workout. I did 15 minutes on the stair master (which was harder today because of the workout I did yesterday) and did some work with weights. I am excited to work with a personal trainer and learn some new things that I can implement when I am working out alone.

I mentioned in my first post that I made spaghetti squash for the first time. I made spaghetti using ground chicken and added fresh bell pepper and mushrooms to the sauce. I have leftovers that I will be eating for lunch tomorrow. This meal is not husband approved.

Where do I start?

something new

There is not an easy way to say this. I could add some fluff to this intro but it would only delay the inevitable. I will be 31 in 13 days and as of this morning, I topped the scales at 249.8 pounds. How did I get here?

In the fall of 2006 I weighed 160 pounds after busting my butt that summer counting calories and working out at the gym 5 days a week. Since then I have slowly been packing on the pounds. I weighed somewhere between 200 and 210 lbs at my March wedding two years ago. On September 10th of 2013 I smoked my last cigarette and quickly gained about 40 lbs and added an additional 10 lbs after the quick 40 I gained after I quit smoking.

I am a non-smoker (this is still so strange for me to say) and I have gone over 12 months without drinking a soda. Giving up soda was way easier than I thought it would be and I told myself that I could still have them in moderation if I wanted to but now I have gone so long I just don’t want to break the streak.

I have been preparing myself  over the last few months to work on life changes that will help me lose all of this weight I have slowly and quickly packed on over the last 9 years.

I have been inspired by my friends as well as complete strangers who are working hard to get fit and healthy. I would have to say that my friend Debra is a huge motivator for me. She is ALWAYS working out and doesn’t make it easy for me to make excuses because she sure doesn’t.

She always posts pictures after her workouts using the hash tag #picsoritdidnthappen. I am glad she did/does because seeing that is both motivational and inspiring.

Starting today, I am embarking on a weight loss journey that means a serious lifestyle change, a lot of hard work, sweat and effort. I met with a personal trainer today. “Why now?” he asked. My response to him was:

  • I want to look in the mirror and feel good about it
  • I want to wear cute clothes and not feel like a fatty
  • My husband and I would like to have children
  • I want to possibly avoid health problems that run in my family, including obesity

When you think about needing to lose 100 pounds it is super overwhelming. You know you need to do something but you don’t know where to start and I seems so impossible. I have been doing little things to get going over the last few weeks.

My husband and I are trying to avoid eating out for 30 days (Subway is the one exception). Over the last 5 days, I have been trying to drink at least 64 ounces of water per day and have been successful for most of them. I am working on it :)

I worked out yesterday and today and I am trying to make healthy food choices. I made my first batch of spaghetti squash which turned out to be pretty tasty.

So….Where do I start?

  • I start today!
  • I start one calorie at a time!
  • I start one pound at a time!
  • I start one meal at a time!
  • I start one ounce of water at a time!

Thank you to everyone who has already been an inspiration and motivation to me and a huge thank you in advance for all of the support and encouragement!! I will certainly need it!
